Photo Blog - One Day in Sri Lanka - 2006-2007

Description

When I ended up in Sri Lanka working as an international consultant with Simon Fraser University for the Distance Education Modernization Project (DEMP), I decided to keep a photo cronicle of our adventures.

Production Notes:

This was a fun activity and a great way to keep my friends and family up to date about what Mark and I were up to in Sri Lanka. It proved to be very time consuming though - I must admit that I could not keep up to the original intention of the site which was to post photos everyday...

Photo Award - North Bay Arts Council - 2004

Description

This photo, entitled "Crossroads", was a finalist in the North Bay Arts Council photo contest. It wasn't until I reviewed all the winners that I realized both amateurs and professionals were lumped into the same categories.

Production Notes:

I submitted one photo into each of 4 categories for the Contest. Although I did not place in the top three with any of my photos, it was pleasing to have at least one recognized amongst the finalists.

I distinctly remember taking this photo. I have a Canon EOS 300 with a Tamron 28-300mm lens. The morning I took this shot, we had been camping overnight in the desert just one hour from the city of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. For our overnights, we had a few favourites spots to settle, this one we called "The Bowl". I knew if I was going to get any shots off that day, I'd have to get up early when the sun was low on the horizon and temperature was cool. Even as it was, the sun was barely up, yet I remember sweating profusely as I tramped around on the sand 'hunting' visuals. These little footprints are most probably the result of dung beetles - they are about the size of your thumb and kind of ugly but harmless.

Photo Experiment - Stop Motion in one photo - 2003

Description

At first glance, the photo looks normal and natural but then when your brain engages, you say, "Hey, that can't be"!

Production Notes:

In 2003, w hile Mark and I were playing on one of the huge dunes near Dubai in the UAE, we started testing the 'burst' feature of his camera. I thought it might be neat to scan several of the photos and combine them into one photo. (The camera we used was 'pre-digital').

I was surprised to find out much later that there are many flickr groups dedicated to this type of photography.

Photo Award - Al Khaleej times - May 2002

Description

2nd Runner-up for the Dubai Photographer of the Year sponsored by Minolta and Al Khaleej Times during the famed Dubai Shopping Festival.

Production Notes:

I submitted a total of 4 photos to this, my first photo competition. The theme of the contest was "One World, One Family, One Festival" so all the photos in each category had to reflect the spirit of the shopping festival.

It was a pleasure to receive the "2nd Runner-Up" honour for my photo, "Heritage Singers".

Front Cover Photos for TESOL Arabia PERSPECTIVES

Description

I was honoured to be asked to submit a photo for the front cover of this research journal. Then I was really surprised when the editors used two more of my photos in other editions!

Production Notes:

From the TESOL ARABIA website, "TESOL Arabia Perspectives is an official refereed publication of TESOL Arabia designed to meet the organizations' professional objectives by publishing articles that discuss the teaching and learning of English as an additional language at all levels and with a particular focus on the region (N. Africa, Middle East, the Gulf, and South Asia)"

Wireless Radio Call Card Photo

Description

During the early days of radio, stations would not know how far their signals were traveling. They relied on letters from listeners. In exchange for these reports the station would send a card or letter to the listener thanking them for the report. "QSL" is a Morse code term meaning "acknowledge receipt". Thus a QSL card acknowledges a listeners reception of a certain station. Today, QSL cards area exchanged by amateur radio operators after they have made a contact.

Production Notes:

The Sharjah Amateur Radio Club was careful about the photo they selected for their calling card as they had to ensure there would be space for the information they wanted on the front.

CTELT Pre-Conference Academy Brochure
"Enhancing Teaching and Learning with Technology"

Description

The main promotional piece for the workshop - sent out through email, printed and provided as a download off the website.

Production Notes:

I really enjoyed organizing the Pre-Conference Academy for CTELT. I was pleased with all the support I received from fellow instructors on this project. I was also happy to get a chance to work with Quark Express to create the brochure. I had only tinkered with Quark before this project - my previous experience with desktop publishing programs was with Pagemaker.
